Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects: 3 Important Facts To Know Before Using It

Often promoted as a natural remedy for weight loss, diabetes, cholesterol, and digestive health, as though it's harmless, Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects may occur when used inappropriately.

Made by fermenting crushed apples with yeast and bacteria, Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is often promoted as a natural remedy for weight-loss, diabetes, cholesterol, and digestion, often as though it is harmless simply because it is natural. However, Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects may occur when it is used inappropriately.

Taking Apple Cider Vinegar Undiluted

Most of the proposed metabolic health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar are attributed to its main organic acid, Acetic Acid. The concentration of Acetic Acid in Apple Cider Vinegar is typically 5% to 6%. At this concentration, Apple Cider Vinegar is highly acidic, with a pH of approximately 2–3.

By comparison, water has a pH of 7, which is neutral. But even after adding 250 mL (1 cup) of water to 15 mL (1 tablespoon) of Apple Cider Vinegar, the resulting solution remains highly acidic, with a pH of about 3–4 depending on the vinegar’s formulation and buffering capacity.

Acids can irritate and react with minerals such as calcium, which is an important component of tooth enamel. Recurrent exposure of the mouth, throat and oesophagus to acidic substances can cause irritation.

Similarly, chronic exposure of the esophagus to gastric acid, like in the case of frequent gastric acid reflux, can cause changes to the lining of the esophagus that may increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

Likewise, frequent exposure of the teeth to highly acidic substances, such as undiluted Apple Cider Vinegar, can contribute to dental enamel erosion. Over time, this can weaken and wear away the enamel, increasing the risk of dental disease.

Lastly, undiluted Apple Cider Vinegar side effects may also include aggravated acid reflux (GERD) and heartburn in sensitive individuals, particularly because of its high acidity.

More Does Not Mean More Health Benefits – Only More Apple Cider Vinegar Side Effects

Taking more Apple Cider Vinegar does not necessarily provide greater health benefits and may instead increase your exposure to its acidity and the risk of side effects.

Research suggests that vinegar’s acetic acid can modestly reduce the rise in blood glucose after a meal is people with diabetes.

The amounts studied for this effect are generally in the range of 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 mL), rather than large quantities. Even then, the timing of consumption relative to a meal can also influence its effect.

Accordingly, taking larger amounts is not justified simply because a smaller amount may modestly reduce the rise in blood glucose after a meal.

Currently, however, science does not consistently support Apple Cider Vinegar as a weight-loss remedy. The weight-loss effects observed in some studies, where present, are modest and inconsistent. So, Apple Cider Vinegar is not a reliable long-term weight-loss solution.

Using Apple Cider Vinegar as a Substitute for Medication or to Compensate for Poor Diet

Apple Cider Vinegar should not be used as a substitute for established treatment, particularly for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. Doing so may delay appropriate treatment while exposing you to Apple Cider Vinegar side effects without providing an equivalent therapeutic benefit.

The same principle applies to obesity. Apple Cider Vinegar cannot replace evidence-based dietary modification, behavioral therapy, medication or other appropriate components of weight-loss treatment.

Nor can Apple Cider Vinegar compensate for an otherwise poor-quality diet. If your health problem is diet-related, the appropriate approach is to address the underlying dietary and lifestyle factors, by seeking professional dietary counselling from a qualified dietitian where appropriate.

Similarly, Apple Cider Vinegar cannot replace medication, dietary modification or both when these are indicated for the management of a medical condition.

If you take medication and regularly use Apple Cider Vinegar, discuss this with your healthcare professional. Potential medication-related effects, interactions and Apple Cider Vinegar side effects should be considered rather than assuming that it is safe simply because it is a food or natural product.

After all, “natural” does not necessarily mean effective, safe or therapeutically equivalent to medication, professional dietitian counselling or other evidence-based treatments.

What Should You Do Instead of Relying on Apple Cider Vinegar?

If you are using Apple Cider Vinegar to lose weight, control blood sugar, improve cholesterol or manage another health concern, the more useful question is not “How much Apple Cider Vinegar should I take?” but “What dietary changes are actually appropriate for my health goal?”

For example:

  • For weight management, focus on an appropriate energy deficit eating and lifestyle strategies, adequate protein intake according to your weight and health conditions, dietary quality and sustainable eating habits.
  • For blood glucose management, focus on carbohydrate quality, carbohydrate portion management systems, optimal carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio, carbohydrate-to-protein ration and the overall dietary pattern.
  • For cholesterol management, focus on soluble fibre, unsaturated fats and reducing excessive saturated fat.
  • For general health, focus on overall dietary adequacy and dietary pattern rather than relying on a single food or health product.
